3rd Takenaka Open Seminar to be held on January 25th Lecturer is Mr. Yamamoto Ichita Member of theHouse of Councillors

  • More than 1000 participants in total attended the first and second seminar!The third seminar of the popular series.
  • The lecture will be broadcast over 13 different transmission points. A discussion with Minister Takenaka Heizo is planned.

The first Japanese for-profit university - LEC Tokyo Legal Mind University -is holding a series of Takenaka Open Seminars for the general public, in cooperation with Thinktank TRIgger Lab., which supports Minister Takenaka Heizo (Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications /Minister of State for Privatization of the Postal Services).

We welcome Mr. Yamamoto Ichita, a young expert in the field of the diplomacy and safety, for the third seminar. Mr. Yamamoto is frequently on TV and in newspapers, expressing his views on the diplomacy and safety issues such as Japan-China, Japan-Korea relationships, North Korea issues, Japan-Russia negotiations. The situation surrounding Japan is severe, and it remains to be seen whether Japan will be able to establish leadership in the UN Security Council, or the East Asian Community in the 21st century.Mr. Yamamoto has established a “group for producing Prime Ministers of a new generation” and has frequently expressed his views on reforms. We would like to listen to his enthusiasm for reforms and his message to the younger generations in the 21st century. We are planning a discussion with Minister Takenaka Heizo after the lecture.

Profile of Mr. Yamamoto

As an expert in the field of diplomacy and safety, Mr. Yamamoto has been expressing his views on the diplomacy and safety issues in TV and newspapers. He is also engaged in developing policy for the agriculture and tourism sectors, and organizing various groups and study seminars amongst the MPs. He is known for his activeness and rich ideas.

Currently, he holds the following positions: Chairman of the Committee of Diplomacy and Safety of the House of Councillors, Member of Budget Committee, Special Committee of Iraq Dispatch, Chief of LDP Diplomacy Department and Speech Director, and Sub-Chief of Special Committee on Tourism.

Personal History

Born in 1958, Kusatsu Gunnma Prefecture. Graduated Chuo University, Faculty of Law in 1982. Awarded a Masters in International Politics from George Town Graduate School in 1985. Worked for the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from 1986, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) New York Head Quarter from 1991. In 1995, his father Yamoto Tomio ex-Agricultural Minster and the secretary general at the time passed away, and he ran for the 17th election for the House of Councillors and was elected. In 1999, he occupied the position of the Vice-Minister (two terms) during the Obushi and Mori Cabinet. In 2001, he was re-elected for the House of Councillors in the 19th election. He has been the chairman of the Diplomacy and Security at the House of Councillors from 2003 to October 11th 2004.

Other activities

He has released six CDs as a singer-songwriter. The sixth CD with rap “Kaikaku no Uta (Song of Reform)” is sold all over Japan through major label (Toshiba EMI). He served as DJ for the “Declaration of the Prime Minster of the New Generation” at the radio program from 2001 November to 2002 June. He was an anchor of the TV program “Touron!! Nagatacho (Debating!! Nacatacho)” (CS Broadcast). He has published articles on diplomacy and economics in magazine Bungeisyunzyu or Chou-Koron. He has edited the book “If I became a Prime Minister – Young Japanese Leaders” (Kadokawa Publisher 2002).He also participated in the “Manifest Debate: The Last Testimony” (Koubunsya 2003).

In this series of lectures, we welcome the prominent guest speakers from various fields, such as national security, regional revitalization, political and fiscal reforms and education problems.These are the issues that Japan face in the 21st century as structural theme.

For the first seminar on October 10th(Monday,National Holiday), we welcomed Minister Takenaka Heizo (Minister of State for Economic and Fiscal Policy /Minister of State for Privatization of the Postal Services) on the topic "Structural Reform and Japan in 21st century".The room at Chiyoda campus was crowded with participants - some of them could not enter the room. Participants including the broadcasts numbered 872 in total.

On November 24th (Thursday) we welcomed Mr. Miki Watanabe, CEO of the Watami Co., Ltd. who delivered a speech "Date your dream".He talked in the Chiyoda campus and 423 people participated including the broadcast. In his speech, Mr. Watanabe reflected on his own experience and emphasized the importance of having a clear deadline for one’s dream ("date your dream"). He also emphasized the importance of making efforts to change one’s life everyday. Mr. Takenaka spontaneously appeared on the stage and he and Mr. Watanabe enjoyed a congenial discussion. In the final round of the Takenaka seminar, Mr. Sorimachi Katsuo, the CEO of the LEC Tokyo Legal Mind K.K will have a dialogue with the Minister Takenaka Heizo.The date will be announced when it is determined.
